Cellphones for Science — Two Years Later: Sweet Results from a Utah Classroom

A Sweet Update from Utah

Back in 2021, we shared the story of how 911 Cell Phone Bank partnered with a dedicated Utah science teacher to bring used cellphones into the classroom for hands-on STEM learning. Students were able to safely disassemble donated phones to explore real-world electronics and learn how technology impacts recycling and sustainability.

Fast forward to today — that partnership is still thriving, and the results are sweeter than ever.

Learning in Action

A sweet thank-you from Ms. Teresa’s classroom — complete with honey from her own bees!

This month, we received a handwritten note from Ms. Teresa, the same inspiring teacher whose students took part in the Cell Dissect Lab. She wrote:

“My students LOVE the cell phone dissect lab.
Even better, they LEARN! You’re the best!”

Attached to her card was a small jar of golden honey and the following P.S. “The honey is from my own bees. :)” How 🐝-utiful is that? 🍯

Why This Matters

Moments like this remind us why we do what we do. Each phone we collect not only helps keep valuable materials out of landfills and helps survivors of human trafficking and domestic violence, but it also gives students a unique opportunity to learn, explore, and imagine new uses for technology.

These connections — between classrooms, communities, and sustainability — show that responsible tech recycling can have lasting educational impact.

Continuing the Mission

We’re honored to support teachers like Ms. Teresa who turn old devices into learning tools and inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators.
