Every July, people around the globe come together to tackle one of our planet’s most pressing problems: plastic pollution. Plastic Free July is more than just a movement—it’s a reminder that even small, intentional actions can lead to meaningful change.
At the 911 Cell Phone Bank, we believe the same. And one of the simplest ways you can take a stand this month is by donating your unused or unclaimed cell phones and other electronic devices. Because while it may not seem like much, one donated device can reduce plastic waste, prevent toxic e-waste, and even save a life.
Yes. Many people don’t realize that cell phones, tablets, and other electronics are packed with plastic components—casings, circuit boards, wiring insulation, and more. When these devices are thrown away or improperly disposed of, that plastic doesn’t just vanish. It often ends up:
Leaching toxins into landfills, or
Breaking down into microplastics that pollute our waterways and soil.
Globally, millions of phones are discarded each year, contributing to the plastic and e-waste crisis. And in the U.S. alone, over 400,000 cell phones are thrown away every single day.
Since 2004, the 911 Cell Phone Bank (501c3) has kept hundreds of thousands of devices out of landfills. We collect unclaimed or no-longer-used phones and other devices, securely erase all data, and repurpose working devices for victims of domestic violence and human trafficking.
Phones that can’t be reused?
They’re sent to R2-certified recycling partners who responsibly dismantle and recycle every component—including the plastic—according to the highest environmental standards.
When you donate a cell phone or other device:
✅ You help reduce plastic waste and prevent environmental harm.
✅ You eliminate data security risks from unclaimed or forgotten devices.
✅ You provide a life-saving tool to someone escaping abuse or exploitation.
It’s one small step…
…that creates a big difference for the planet and people.
Plastic Free July challenges us to refuse single-use plastic, but it also invites us to think bigger:
What else can I do to protect the planet?
How can I extend the life of what I already own?
Donating your unused device is a powerful way to answer those questions.
Whether you’re a business with a full lost-and-found bin, a police department with outdated tech and/or property & evidence ready for purge, or an individual with an unused device in a drawer—your donation matters.
