PRESS RELEASE
The 911 Cell Phone Bank, an initiative of the Charitable Recycling Foundation, Inc., proudly reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and community well-being by addressing the growing issue of electronic waste (e-waste). Through innovative partnerships and eco-conscious practices, the program gives discarded cell phones a second life while supporting victims of human trafficking and domestic violence.
Globally, an estimated 50 million tons of e-waste are generated annually, with the United States contributing about 7 million tons. Alarmingly, less than 20% of this waste is recycled properly, leading to significant environmental and health risks. The 911 Cell Phone Bank combats this crisis by repurposing unclaimed and outdated phones, keeping harmful materials out of landfills, and putting them to meaningful use.
“Reducing e-waste is not just an environmental imperative; it’s a social responsibility,” said Susan Shipp, Public Relations Coordinator with 911 Cell Phone Bank. “By recycling phones, we’re not only protecting the planet but also providing vital tools to help vulnerable individuals.”
Recycled phones are distributed through law enforcement agencies and advocacy programs to individuals in crisis. These devices provide a secure means of communication for victims to access emergency services and critical resources.
For example, a domestic violence survivor assisted by the Reno Police Department was able to escape years of abuse using a secure phone provided by the program. With this phone, she connected with family, coordinated a relocation plan, and started a new chapter of safety and hope for herself and her children.
The 911 Cell Phone Bank collaborates with law enforcement, advocacy groups, and businesses to:
To date, the program has recycled thousands of phones, preventing significant amounts of e-waste and distributing over 250,000 phones to support advocacy programs and community safety initiatives.
Businesses, organizations, and individuals can help reduce e-waste and create safer communities by donating old devices or partnering with the 911 Cell Phone Bank. For more information, visit www.911CellPhoneBank.org or call 866-290-7864.
By transforming discarded phones into life-saving resources, the 911 Cell Phone Bank bridges the gap between environmental responsibility and community empowerment.
