February marks National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, a time to shed light on the alarming statistics surrounding teen dating violence and highlight resources available to victims. Studies show that 1 in 3 adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional, or verbal abuse from a dating partner. This staggering statistic underscores the importance of accessible resources for teens in crisis.
The 911 Cell Phone Bank, through its network of advocacy affiliates, plays a crucial role in helping victims by providing secure, fully functional cell phones. These devices are often a lifeline for teens trapped in abusive relationships, enabling them to contact emergency services, connect with loved ones, or access critical support services.
“For many teens experiencing dating violence, having access to a safe, untraceable phone can mean the difference between staying in danger or reaching safety,” said Susan Shipp, Public Relations Coordinator with 911 Cell Phone Bank. “These devices empower victims to regain control of their lives and take the first step toward recovery.”
Statistics reveal that 25% of teens who experience dating violence never tell anyone. Providing these young individuals with access to communication tools can be a vital step in breaking the cycle of silence and abuse. Through the generous donations of devices from businesses, corporations, and individuals, the 911 Cell Phone Bank has supported thousands of victims nationwide.
However, 90% of the phones donated to the program, though properly recycled, cannot be reused in their entirety. This makes it crucial to secure as many donations as possible to meet the growing demand for devices that can be distributed to program affiliates.
The 911 Cell Phone Bank is calling on businesses, corporations, and organizations with lost-and-found departments to consider donating unclaimed devices. These donations not only support victims but also promote sustainability by reducing electronic waste.
